The pink lagoons are part of an active sea salt production facility. The color intensity depends on sunlight, season, and the microscopic life thriving in the high-salinity water.
What time of day is best to visit Las Coloradas?
The best time to visit is between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
During these hours, the sun is directly overhead. This angle maximizes the reflection of the pink hue. For the absolute brightest colors at the shallow Cristalizadores pools, aim for 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
What is the best month to see the pink lakes in Mexico?
The dry season, from March to August, provides the best conditions.
During these months, you get clear skies and strong sunlight. The lack of rain keeps the water salinity high. This high salinity helps the microalgae produce the intense fuchsia color.

Why is the water pink at Las Coloradas?
The pink color is naturally produced by microalgae and halobacteria.
Specifically, Dunaliella salina microalgae and halobacteria thrive in the extreme salinity. The water in these lagoons can exceed normal ocean water salinity by up to four times.

What are the opening hours for Las Coloradas?
Parque Turístico Las Coloradas is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
You can visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, but the pink color will appear less intense. Plan your drive to ensure you arrive during the peak midday hours.

How does timing affect visiting Rio Lagartos?
Many visitors combine the salt flats with a morning boat tour in the nearby Ría Lagartos estuary.
If you want to see Caribbean flamingos, you can hire a boat early in the day. After a 1.5 to 2-hour boat ride, you can head to the salt park just in time for the peak midday sun.

Can I bring professional cameras for midday photos?
Drones, tripods, and professional camera equipment are strictly prohibited without prior authorization.
You cannot bring this gear around the lakes. You will need to rely on smartphones or standard cameras to capture the strong midday colors. We highly recommend polarized sunglasses to cut the severe glare off the white salt.

Questions travellers ask
Is the water pink year-round?
Yes, the lakes maintain their pink color throughout the year. However, the intensity drops on cloudy days or outside of peak sunlight hours.
Do I need to book a tour to see the pink water?
Yes. Access to the lakes is completely fenced off. All visitors must purchase a guided walking, biking, or safari truck tour to see the water up close.
Can you visit Las Coloradas without a tour?
No. You must pay a mandatory Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve tax of about 100–200 MXN and purchase an official guided tour to enter the park.
